Afghan security forces on high alert as nation goes to polling

Afghan security forces have been deployed to all polling sites across the country to ensure safety of the 2019 presidential election, according to the Ministry of Interior (MoI).

“The Afghan defense and security forces have been deployed to all polling stations across the country and they are on high security alert,” the MoI spokesperson, Nasrat Rahimi, posted on his Facebook account.

The ministry had previously announced that around 72,000 Afghan defense and security forces were tasked to ensure security of the election set to be held nationwide in 4,962 polling centers.

The election campaigning period closes tonight at 12:00 PM, September 25, 2019.

15 candidates, including the incumbent president Ghani and chief executive Abdullah, are running for 2019 presidential elections.
