KABUL, AFGHANISTAN – The German Embassy in Islamabad, Pakistan, has announced that the process for Afghan citizens to apply for German work and study visas will become online.
In a statement released yesterday (Friday, May 1), the embassy said that starting from the beginning of June, Afghan citizens will be able to submit their applications online through the embassy’s consular services portal and upload the required documents.
The German Embassy stated that submitting applications through the consular services portal will make the process easier, faster, and more efficient.
The embassy added that the new system will lead to significantly faster processing of applications.
According to the embassy’s announcement, applicants will be able to upload their documents easily and securely, step by step. After completing the upload of all required documents, they will be able to independently schedule an appointment based on the validity of their Pakistani entry visa.
The German Embassy also stated that applications which are complete from the beginning will be processed first and will result in receiving an appointment within a shorter period of time.
Previously, Afghan citizens applying for German work and study visas through the embassy in Islamabad had to first enter a waiting list. After waiting for several months, they would receive an appointment, and only then would their documents be reviewed.
Now, under the new changes, applicants first upload and submit their documents to the embassy, and then receive an appointment.
Germany has maintained a cautious but engaged approach toward Afghanistan in recent years, focusing primarily on humanitarian assistance and support for civil society rather than formal political recognition.
Its immigration policies aim to balance humanitarian responsibility with regulatory control, offering pathways such as study, skilled work, and limited protection programs for vulnerable individuals, including Afghans.
At the same time, Germany has tightened documentation requirements and emphasizes orderly, legal migration channels, making systems like this new online portal part of a broader effort to streamline processes while maintaining oversight.
Overall, this shift toward digitalization reflects Germany’s attempt to improve efficiency and transparency in visa processing for Afghan applicants, while continuing to manage migration through structured and rules-based mechanisms.
