KABUL, AFGHANISTAN – The Afghanistan Freedom Front (AFF), an armed group fighting the Taliban, has claimed it killed three Taliban members and wounded two others in an overnight attack on a Taliban checkpoint in Kabul.
The group said in a post on X that its fighters targeted a Taliban checkpoint in the Sarai Shamali area of the capital’s 11th district at around 9:00 pm local time on Wednesday, April 1.
The AFF added that none of its fighters were harmed in the operation.
Taliban authorities have not commented on the reported attack or confirmed the claimed casualties.
The reported attack follows the group’s announcement that it would resume operations after a pause during the Muslim holy month of Ramadan and the Eid al-Fitr holiday. Earlier this week, the AFF claimed responsibility for an attack in the Baharak district of Badakhshan province, where it said four Taliban fighters were killed and three others wounded. The group also released video footage of that attack on a Taliban watchtower.
Led by General Muhammad Yasin Zia, the former Chief of Personnel of the Afghan National Defense and Security Forces (ANDSF), the AFF is made up largely of former security personnel. It is one of the more active armed groups conducting guerrilla-style attacks against Taliban targets, primarily in Kabul and several other provinces.
Since its formation shortly after the Taliban’s return to power in August 2021, the AFF has claimed responsibility for hundreds of attacks across Afghanistan, claiming it has killed or wounded hundreds of Taliban fighters.
The United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA) has repeatedly documented attacks by the AFF and other armed opposition groups, such as the National Resistance Front (NRF), in its quarterly reports to the UN Security Council.
The Taliban continues to downplay the impact of such groups, saying there is no active armed resistance in the country and often declining to comment on reported attacks.
