KABUL, AFGHANISTAN – A young man has been stabbed to death in northern Afghanistan’s Jowzjan province, while a former senior official from the previous government was wounded in a separate armed attack in Kandahar, according to local sources.
Residents in Jowzjan say the victim, identified as Jahangir, was killed on Tuesday (February 3) in the second security district of Sheberghan, the provincial capital. Taliban police spokesman Abdul Sattar Halimi confirmed the killing and said one suspect has been arrested in connection with the incident. He did not provide details on the motive, adding that investigations are ongoing.
In a separate incident in southern Kandahar, Tofan Waziri, a former adviser and spokesman to the executive office during Afghanistan’s previous government, was injured after being attacked by armed individuals on Wednesday morning (February 4), sources said. The assault reportedly took place outside his home in the Yakh Kariz area of Kandahar’s 15th district, where he was severely beaten before the attackers fled the scene.
A local source said Waziri is currently receiving medical treatment at a hospital in Aino Mina. Waziri had left Afghanistan following the collapse of the former government but later returned through the Taliban’s so-called reconciliation commission.
The motive behind the attack remains unclear, and Taliban local authorities in Kandahar have not commented on the incident.
The two cases come amid frequent reports of mysterious killings, violent assaults, and the discovery of bodies across several provinces, raising concerns over public safety. This is despite repeated claims by Taliban authorities that nationwide security has been fully restored in Afghanistan.
