Man Killed by Sons in Southern Afghanistan, Sources Say

KABUL, AFGHANISTAN – A man has been killed by his sons in Afghanistan’s southern Helmand province, according to local sources.

A source, speaking on condition of anonymity, told KabulNow that the incident took place on Sunday (22 February) in the village of Sultan Abad in Musa Qala district.

The source said the victim, identified as Sheikh, was severely beaten and killed by his sons using farming tools.

The motive for the killing was described as domestic violence.

Taliban authorities have not yet commented on the incident.

The killing highlights ongoing concerns about domestic violence and family disputes in Afghanistan, where economic hardship, social pressures and limited access to legal and support services have exacerbated tensions within households.

Human rights organizations have repeatedly warned that weakened institutional oversight and restrictions on civil society have reduced avenues for mediation and protection in cases of domestic abuse. In rural and conflict-affected areas, disputes are often handled informally, sometimes escalating into violence.

There are no official nationwide statistics available on domestic violence cases under the current administration, but local media frequently report incidents involving family members, underscoring the persistent vulnerability of individuals within the home
