UNICEF to Rebuild 165 Schools Across Afghanistan

The United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) says it will rebuild 165 schools across nine provinces in Afghanistan, in a project funded by the government of Japan.

In a post on X, UNICEF said the reconstruction aims to improve access to education and allow more children to continue their studies, particularly in areas where learning facilities are limited or damaged.

The agency did not specify which provinces will benefit from the project.

Many children in remote parts of Afghanistan currently study in rented or temporary buildings due to the lack of proper school infrastructure.

The announcement comes as the Taliban continue to ban girls from attending school beyond the sixth grade, restricting access to education for millions of Afghan girls while boys are still allowed to attend.

UN agencies have repeatedly warned that the exclusion of girls from education is deepening Afghanistan’s humanitarian and development crisis.
