The Taliban’s Supreme Court says 12 people were publicly flogged in Afghanistan’s Parwan province after being convicted on charges related to the use and sale of narcotics.
In a statement released on Monday (January 5), the court said the punishment was carried out in accordance with a ruling issued by the primary court of Parwan city. The individuals were flogged in public earlier the same day.
According to the statement, each person received between 10 and 15 lashes. The court added that the individuals were also sentenced to one to three years in prison.
Since returning to power in August 2021, the Taliban have repeatedly enforced corporal punishment in public, including floggings and executions. At least 12 people have been executed in public in the presence of large crowds, according to Taliban announcements.
International human rights organisations have strongly condemned such punishments, describing public executions and corporal punishment as violations of international law and human dignity, and have repeatedly called on the Taliban to halt the practice.
