KABUL, AFGHANISTAN – At least 12 people have been killed and 11 others injured following heavy rainfall and flooding across Afghanistan over the past three days, according to the country’s National Disaster Management Authority, which is currently under Taliban control.
Mohammad Yousuf Hamad, the head of information and public relations at the authority, announced the figures on Thursday (1 January) in a video statement.
He said the casualties were reported in 11 provinces, including Kapisa, Parwan, Daikundi, Uruzgan, Kandahar, Helmand, Badghis, Faryab, Badakhshan, Herat and Farah.
Mr. Hamad added that flooding and heavy rainfall had completely destroyed 274 houses and partially damaged 558 others in the affected areas.
According to the officials, the disaster also caused damage to public infrastructure, including eight mosque prayer halls, 209 kilometers of roads, eight small bridges, and 27 shops.
Taliban disaster management officials said dozens of jeribs of agricultural land and orchards were also damaged, causing significant losses to local residents.
In recent days, several parts of the country have experienced heavy rain and snowfall. Flooding in warmer regions has led to casualties, while snowfall in some provinces has blocked major roads and left a number of travelers stranded.
