The World Food Program (WFP) says it has distributed food assistance to tens of thousands of people in northern Afghanistan, as hunger deepens ahead of the harsh winter.
In a statement posted on X on Wednesday (December 24), WFP said it provided wheat, pulses and nutritious food to 14,000 people in Jawzjan province. The agency noted that the aid was delivered before the onset of winter to help vulnerable families endure extreme cold and ensure proper nutrition for children.
A day earlier, WFP reported that it had delivered life-saving assistance to more than 34,500 people in Takhar province. According to the agency, the support included essential food items as well as nutritious supplements for children under the age of five.
WFP said the assistance is aimed at helping families remain healthy and resilient during Afghanistan’s severe winter conditions.
The distributions come as the UN agency has repeatedly warned of a worsening hunger crisis in the country. WFP estimates that more than 17 million people across Afghanistan are facing food insecurity this winter, with the depth and severity of hunger continuing to increase.
