UNICEF says prolonged drought has become a major challenge for families across Afghanistan, with serious impacts on children’s health and safety.
In astatement released on Monday (December 22), the UN children’s agency said it had distributed cash assistance to around 3,000 families in Takhar province to help them cope with the effects of drought.
According to UNICEF, the assistance was delivered in June this year in cooperation with the UN’s emergency fund.
Afghanistan has been grappling with severe drought for more than four years, largely driven by climate change.
United Nations officials say the drought has led to declining agricultural production and reduced access to food for millions of people.
UN agencies have repeatedly warned about the consequences of continued drought in Afghanistan, calling for increased support to help communities withstand its growing impact.
