Media outlets controlled by the Taliban report that on Thursday (December 11), a total of 1,109 Afghan families were deported from Pakistan and Iran and entered Afghanistan.
According to Bakhtar News Agency, 643 families crossed into Afghanistan through Spin Boldak, 324 families via Torkham, and 36 families through Bahramcha in Helmand after being expelled from Pakistan.
The agency also reported that 66 families entered through Pul-e Abrisham, and 40 families through Islam Qala deported from Iran.
Both Pakistan and Iran have intensified their deportations of Afghan migrants this year. The United Nations estimates that in 2024, around 2.5 million Afghans were deported or forced to return from the two neighboring countries.
Georgette Gagnon, acting head of the UN Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA), told the UN Security Council that the mass return of migrants has increased Afghanistan’s population by six percent, worsening the already severe humanitarian crisis.
