Germany’s Foreign Minister, Johann Wadephul, has said the country will accelerate the relocation of Afghan refugees who hold legally binding admission commitments from Pakistan.
Speaking to the German news agency NDP, Wadephul said the issue has now become a priority for government. He expressed hope that the transfer process would be completed by the end of the current calendar year.
At present, around 1,900 Afghan refugees are in Pakistan awaiting relocation to Germany.
The German government has recently announced that it will reject the applications of 650 Afghan refugees. Germany’s Interior Ministry said these individuals had not received legally binding admission assurances.
Germany has also offered financial incentives to some Afghan refugees in exchange for withdrawing their migration applications. So far, 62 people have accepted the offer.
