Local sources in Panjshir say the Taliban have refused to distribute weapons to their newly recruited local forces in the province, instead instructing them to purchase their own arms.
Sources from among the recruits in the Taliban’s police ranks in Panjshir report that their commanders has warned they will be dismissed if they fail to provide a weapon themselves.
According to these recruits, they joined the Taliban police around six months ago, but no weapons have been issued to them since their recruitment.
Sources add that the Taliban’s provincial police command has told local members to secure a weapon on their own and use it while performing their duties.
They claim that more than ten recruits have already been dismissed for failing to bring a weapon.
Finding weapons for purchases in Panjshir is reportedly difficult, and some Taliban members are said to be selling firearms confiscated from civilians at high prices.
Sources note that the Taliban made similar demands from their local recruits in Panjshir last year as well.
The Taliban maintain a heavier military presence in Panjshir compared to other provinces. The group has repeatedly claimed that it has integrated local residents into its ranks.
Following the Taliban’s takeover of Afghanistan, Panjshir witnessed armed resistance. Observers say the group’s strong deployment in the province is aimed at preventing renewed insurgent activity.
