Amnesty International: Taliban Have Made Life Unbearable for Afghan Women and Girls

Amnesty International has condemned the Taliban’s new restrictions on women in Herat province, saying the group has made life “unbearable” for women and girls in Afghanistan.

In a post on X on Thursday (November 13), the rights organisation stated that the Taliban have excluded women from almost every sphere of life and systematically stripped them of their rights and dignity.

In recent days, the Taliban have made the wearing of the burqa mandatory for women in Herat, barring those without it from entering government offices and hospitals. Amnesty International warned that these restrictions will severely limit women’s access to essential healthcare.
The organisation urged the international community to stand in solidarity with Afghan women and girls by supporting their rights and holding the Taliban accountable for their actions.

Since regaining power, the Taliban have imposed sweeping restrictions on women’s public presence and dress. Under their Ministry for the Promotion of Virtue and Prevention of Vice, women are required to cover their entire bodies, and their voices are deemed “awrah” – meaning they should not be heard in public.
