KABUL, AFGHANISTAN – A woman was shot dead on Saturday during a public hearing at a Taliban Court of Appeal in Herat province, western Afghanistan, local sources reported.
According to the sources, the woman was the wife of Abdul Rahman Moradi Alizai, a former member of the Herat Provincial Council, who was found dead at his home in January this year.
Following Alizai’s death, the Taliban detained his wife, accusing her of complicity in the killing. Her trial began on Saturday morning at the Herat Court of Appeal.
The sources said the shooting took place around 10:30 a.m. when an attendee opened fire during the hearing, killing the woman on the spot.
The Taliban have reportedly detained Alizai’s brother, who is alleged to have been involved in the attack. Details about the motives behind the shooting have not been released.
Taliban authorities in Herat have not commented on the incident.
Since the Taliban returned to power in 2021, security incidents and violent crimes have reportedly risen across Afghanistan. Rights groups and activists have expressed concern, accusing the authorities of failing to ensure public safety and conduct thorough investigations into such crimes.
