Young Man Dies by Suicide in Taliban Prison in Eastern Afghanistan

KABUL, AFGHANISTAN – A 26-year-old man has reportedly died by suicide in a Taliban-controlled prison in Nangarhar province, local sources said.

The victim, identified as Lal Paraz, ended his life in Nangarhar prison on Friday, August 15, a relative told KabulNow on condition of anonymity. He was originally from the Nazian district and had been held by the Taliban for nearly four years.

Sources said Paraz developed severe mental health problems during his imprisonment, which were worsened by the prison conditions, and had previously made several suicide attempts while in custody.

Taliban police officials in Nangarhar have not responded to requests for comment.

This incident highlights ongoing concerns about conditions in Taliban-run prisons. Reports suggest detainees face severe neglect, including insufficient food, water, clothing, and medical care, as well as delays in judicial proceedings.

Human rights groups have long warned about the treatment of prisoners under the Taliban, citing torture, poor living conditions, and lack of fair trials. They continue to call for international attention and independent investigations.
