Former Police Officer Shot Dead by Unknown Assailants in Kabul

KABUL, AFGHANISTAN – A senior police officer from the former Afghan government, originally from Panjshir province, was shot and killed in Kabul, local sources confirmed.

The victim, identified as Ubaidullah Panjshiri, was gunned down by unidentified armed men on Tuesday (July 8) in the Karte Naw area of the capital.

The motive and identity of the attackers remain unclear. A source close to Ubaidullah said he had no known personal or political enemies.

According to sources, Ubaidullah hailed from Jangalak village in central Panjshir and had been residing in the Old Microrayon neighborhood of Kabul. Following the collapse of the former government in August 2021, he had been unemployed and living a civilian life. He previously held the rank of colonel.

Taliban authorities have not yet commented on the incident.

Despite the Taliban’s announcement of a general amnesty for former government and security officials, human rights organizations continue to report cases of arbitrary detentions, torture, and extrajudicial killings. These groups have repeatedly condemned the Taliban for ongoing violations, particularly targeting former security personnel and government employees.
