Father Kills Daughter in Central Afghanistan Over Alleged Illicit Relationship

KABUL, AFGHANISTAN – A man in Afghanistan’s Uruzgan province has killed his daughter and another man over an alleged illicit relationship, according to Taliban authorities.

The incident took place in Chora district on Friday, said Bilal Uruzgani, the spokesperson for the Taliban police in Uruzgan. He added that Taliban forces arrested several people linked to the killings but did not provide further details.

Honor killings and domestic violence have long claimed the lives of women in Afghanistan, especially in rural areas where tribal customs and patriarchal rules dominate daily life.

Since the Taliban returned to power in August 2021, reports of such violence have increased, while protection mechanisms for women have disappeared.

Under the previous government, women at risk of violence had limited but growing access to shelters, legal aid, and support services. Following the Taliban takeover, shelters were closed, and legal aid and support services were halted. Legal protections, including the Law on the Elimination of Violence Against Women (EVAW), were also dismantled.

Without legal safeguards or safe spaces, many Afghan women and girls are now more vulnerable than ever. Human rights groups warn that the absence of institutional support has created an environment of impunity for perpetrators of domestic violence and so-called honor crimes.
