AFF Claims Attack on Taliban Vice and Virtue Chief in Kunduz, Killing Two

KABUL, AFGHANISTAN – The Afghanistan Freedom Front (AFF) says its fighters targeted the headquarters of Mullah Najib Ghafouri, the Taliban’s head of the Ministry for the Promotion of Virtue and Prevention of Vice in Kunduz province.

In a statement, the anti-Taliban group said the attack occurred Monday evening (July 21) in the Khanabad port area of Kunduz city, killing two Taliban members and injuring another. AFF added that there is no confirmed information yet about the fate of Mullah Najib.

However, Jumauddin Khaksar, a spokesperson for the Taliban police command in Kunduz, rejected the claim as “completely false.”

AFF stated that it has escalated retaliatory attacks against Taliban officials in response to arbitrary arrests, organized kidnappings, and harassment of women by the Taliban’s Vice and Virtue department.

The claim comes as Taliban enforcers in Kabul have launched a fresh wave of detentions targeting women and girls over alleged “improper hijab,” sparking widespread outrage from rights groups and activists.

The Afghanistan Freedom Front, formed after the Taliban seized power in 2021, is led by former Afghan military chief General Yasin Zia. The group, comprised mainly of ex-Afghan National Defense and Security Forces (ANDSF) personnel, has carried out attacks against Taliban positions in Panjshir, Kabul, Balkh, and other provinces.
