UN Security Council to Review Afghanistan’s Situation Next Week

KABUL, AFGHANISTAN – The United Nations Security Council is set to convene on Monday, June 23, to assess the ongoing situation in Afghanistan.

According to the UN Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA), Roza Otunbayeva, the UN Secretary-General’s Special Representative and head of UNAMA, will brief the Council on recent developments in the country.

The session will also include a review of the latest report by UN Secretary-General António Guterres on Afghanistan.

The Security Council holds regular briefings on Afghanistan every three months.

This upcoming meeting comes as the 59th session of the UN Human Rights Council, which opened on June 16 in Geneva, featured a detailed report by Richard Bennett, the UN Special Rapporteur on the situation of human rights in Afghanistan. His findings underscored ongoing concerns about systematic rights violations, particularly against women and girls under Taliban rule.
