KABUL, AFGHANISTAN – Armed robbers have fatally stabbed a young rickshaw driver in Jalalabad city’s sixth district, sources in Nangarhar province reported.
Hayatullah, a local resident, said the attack occurred on Saturday afternoon (May 31) in the Hadda Akhundzada area. According to him, the assailants stabbed the driver and fled the scene with his rickshaw.
The victim, identified as Sultan, was found gravely wounded by the roadside. He died shortly after being transported to a nearby hospital.
Sultan was originally from Khogyani district but had been living with his family in the Khales Family area of Jalalabad’s sixth district.
A separate source said Sultan had married just a few months ago and worked as a daily-wage rickshaw driver to support his household.
Sayed Tayeb Hamad, spokesperson for the Taliban police in Nangarhar, confirmed the killing and said an investigation is underway.
The incident comes amid a sharp rise in violent crime and mysterious killings across Afghanistan. In the past week alone, at least seven such deaths have been reported, including the killings of two children—a five-year-old girl and a seven-year-old boy.
The Taliban, who claim to have restored security nationwide since returning to power, face growing criticism from citizens, human rights groups, and activists over their failure to protect civilians and their lack of transparency in investigating such crimes.
