KABUL, AFGHANISTAN – The Coordination Council of Afghan Diplomatic and Consular Missions has strongly condemned the violent assault on a two-year-old Afghan child at Sheremetyevo International Airport in Moscow, calling on Russian authorities to launch an immediate, transparent, and thorough investigation.
In a statement issued on Thursday, June 26, the council described the attack as “brutal and inhumane,” confirming that the child sustained severe physical injuries, including brain trauma.
The council stressed that the incident underscores the growing vulnerability of Afghan refugees and called on the international community to take urgent steps to protect their safety and dignity.
The assault reportedly occurred on Monday, when a 31-year-old Belarusian man brutally attacked the child and slammed him to the ground inside the airport.
Footage published by the media shows the man picking up the toddler before violently throwing him onto the floor.
The child is now hospitalized with a fractured spine and skull.
The boy and his mother had reportedly arrived in Russia after fleeing the ongoing conflict between Iran and Israel.
Moscow police have arrested the suspect on attempted murder charges. He remains in custody under investigation.
The Taliban’s embassy in Moscow has not yet issued a statement on the incident.
