Afghan Woman Killed by Husband After Release from Taliban Prison

KABUL, AFGHANISTAN – A woman in Nangarhar province, eastern Afghanistan, was killed by her husband shortly after her release from Taliban custody, local sources reported.

The sources told KabulNow that the incident occurred on Sunday night, June 8, in Spin Ghar district. The woman was hanged in her bedroom by her husband.

According to the sources, she was detained by the Taliban about a year ago on accusations of having an “illicit relationship.” Before sentencing her to one year in prison, the group publicly flogged her.

The sources said the woman was released from prison a day before Eid al-Adha, apparently as part of an Eid gesture, and was killed by her husband the following night. She was the mother of three children.

Taliban authorities in Nangarhar have not yet commented on the killing.

This is the second recent case of domestic killing reported in Nangarhar. A few weeks ago, another man killed his wife in Bati Kot district.

Since the Taliban’s return to power nearly four years ago, incidents of domestic violence has surged. Women face severe restrictions and have limited or no access to protection or justice.

Between January 2022 and June 2024, Afghan Witness documented at least 700 cases of violence affecting 840 women and girls. These include femicide, torture, sexual violence, enforced disappearances, and physical abuse.

Since returning to power, the Taliban has detained and publicly flogged dozens of women on charges labelled as “moral corruption.” Many of the victims face further mistreatment from their families or communities after their release, resulting in instances of suicide or killings perpetrated by relatives.
