KABUL, AFGHANISTAN – Amir Khan Muttaqi, Taliban’s foreign minister, met with Ismail Darwish, head of Hamas’ leadership council, and several senior members of the group in Doha, according to authorities.
Taliban foreign ministry spokesperson Abdul Qahar Balkhi said on Thursday that Muttaqi praised Hamas for its “resistance and perseverance” in Gaza and condemned what he described as “genocide” and the “deliberate creation of widespread hunger” by Israel.
“The people of Afghanistan support the legitimate struggle of our Palestinian brothers and wish them success,” he said in a statement.
The Taliban have consistently voiced support for Hamas and denounced Israel’s actions in Gaza as genocide.
They have also repeatedly urged the international community—especially Muslim-majority nations—to back Palestinians in the ongoing conflict.
The war in Gaza began on October 7, 2023, when Hamas launched a surprise assault on Israeli cities, killing more than 1,200 people and taking around 250 hostages.
In response, Israel launched a massive military campaign by air, land, and sea. To date, more than 50,000 Palestinians, including several senior Hamas leaders, have been killed in the offensive.
