KABUL, AFGHANISTAN – The UN Security Council will convene a meeting on Afghanistan tomorrow, March 10.
Roza Otunbayeva, head of the UN Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA), is expected to brief the council on the country’s situation.
Afghanistan remains in crisis, facing severe economic and humanitarian challenges. In his latest report, UN Secretary-General António Guterres noted that while large-scale conflicts have subsided over the past three years, the country’s economy remains fragile, and it continues to experience one of the world’s worst humanitarian crises.
Guterres warned that the Taliban’s restrictive policies, particularly those targeting women, have further undermined economic activity, livelihoods, and the delivery of humanitarian aid.
The Security Council is also set to meet on March 17 to review UNAMA’s mandate, which is due to expire on that date. The mission is expected to be renewed.
The Taliban have dismissed UNAMA’s role as ineffective and unsuccessful.
