NRF Claims Responsibility for Killing Three Taliban Members in Herat Attack

KABUL, AFGHANISTAN – The National Resistance Front (NRF) has announced that its fighters killed three Taliban members and injured another in an attack in Herat province.

According to the group’s statement, the attack took place on Saturday night, November 9, in the 11th district of the provincial capital.

The NRF said that its forces ambushed the Taliban members while they were conducting a nighttime patrol. During the assault, one of the Taliban’s weapons was reportedly seized by the NRF fighters.

There has been no comment from Taliban officials regarding the incident.

This attack marks the latest escalation in a series of operations claimed by the NRF in urban areas. In the past 48 hours, the resistance group reported carrying out three separate assaults on Taliban forces in Kabul, reflecting an uptick in their offensive activities in the capital and other major cities.

The NRF, along with the Afghanistan Freedom Front (AFF)—both of which consists largely of former Afghan National Defense and Security Forces (ANDSF) personnel—has continued to engage in sporadic clashes with the Taliban since their return to power in 2021. The resistance groups have concentrated their operations in multiple provinces, seeking to disrupt Taliban control.

In its annual report published in March, the NRF claimed responsibility for 150 attacks in the past year, resulting in over 400 Taliban casualties across 17 provinces.

The group’s leader, Ahmad Massoud, in a recent interview with CNN, said that the NRF fields approximately 5,000 active fighters. He emphasized that their fight extends beyond confronting the Taliban, as they are also targeting up to 20 other terrorist organizations operating within Afghanistan.
