KABUL, AFGHANISTAN – Local sources report that around one hundred students at a religious school in Samangan province, central Afghanistan, have been poisoned.
Local sources told KabulNow that the incident occurred at Khana Sangi religious school in the Dara-i-Sufi Payin district on Thursday, October 10.
According to sources, the poisoned students were transported to a local hospital for treatment and have now all recovered.
The cause of the poisoning of the students remains unknown.
The local Taliban authorities have not officially commented, but a source within the Taliban has confirmed the incident, saying that two individuals have been arrested in connection with it.
Since the Taliban’s return to power in Afghanistan, several cases of mass poisoning, particularly among female students, have been reported in various provinces.
Earlier in May, nearly 80 female students and teachers fell ill after ingesting an unknown poisonous substance at a school in the Kiti district of central Daykundi province.
Similarly, in June 2023, nearly 100 primary schoolgirls and teachers were poisoned in two separate incidents at public schools in Sangcharak district, northern Sar-e-Pol province.
The incident sparked widespread reactions, including from the UN and EU, who urged the Taliban authorities to investigate. However, the circumstances surrounding the incident remain unclear.
