Taliban foreign minister discusses Afghanistan with senior Qatar officials

The Taliban Foreign Minister, Amir Khan Muttaqi, met with Qatar’s Minister of State for International Cooperation, Lolwah bint Rashid Al Khater, on Wednesday to discuss recent developments in Afghanistan.

Qatar’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs said in a statement that both sides also discussed cooperation regarding health, education, and economic empowerment in Afghanistan.

Qatar’s Minister of State reaffirmed Qatar’s commitment to strengthening bilateral relations and continuing support for the people of Afghanistan.

Taliban’s deputy spokesperson, Hafiz Zia Ahmad, in a separate series of tweets, stated that Rashid Al Khater also vowed to coordinate mechanisms to initiate multisectoral projects in the mentioned areas.

This comes following the recent Doha meeting between the US delegation, headed by its Special Representative for Afghanistan, Thomas West, and the Taliban delegation led by Mutaqqai.

The US Department of State said that both sides discussed “critical interests” and “confidence building in support of the Afghan people”.

The Taliban delegation called for “practical steps” on “removing blacklists and lifting sanctions”.
