Newly-wed woman takes her own life in northern Afghanistan amid rise in women suicides

A newly-wed woman has taken her own life in the northern Sar-e-Pol province, days after her wedding.

According to a local Taliban official, the 19-year-old woman shot herself in Zanjan village of Sancharak district on Tuesday.

Din Mohammad Nazari, Taliban police spokesperson in the province, said that the woman had been married for a few days.

The wedding party was reportedly held in the absence of the groom.

The Taliban spokesperson did not provide any further information.

Following the Taliban takeover in August 2021, there has been a significant increase in the number of youths, particularly girls, committing suicide. Forced marriage, domestic violence, depression, and unemployment are said to be the major factors behind most of the suicide cases in the country.
