Iran executes two Afghan nationals for Shah Cheragh shrine attack

The Iranian State Islamic Republic News Agency (IRNA) has reported the execution of Mohammad Ramez Rashidi and Sayed Naeim Hashem Qatali, the two individuals accused of carrying out the attack on Shah Cheragh shrine in Shiraz last year.

The executions by hanging took place on Saturday morning in Shiraz, according to IRNA.

While IRNA did not mention the nationality of the two defendants, last week the Iranian Human Rights Organization confirmed that they were citizens of Afghanistan and warned of their impending execution. IRNA described the two individuals as “takfiri terrorists” who played a direct role in planning the attack and supporting the main perpetrator.

According to IRNA’s report, the main perpetrator of the attack was injured during a confrontation with Iranian security forces and later died in the hospital. However, the Iranian Human Rights Organization has raised concerns about the fairness of the court proceedings and alleged that the confessions of the defendants were obtained under torture.

The attack on Shah Cheragh shrine that killed at least 13 people and injured 30 others in October, was claimed by the militant group Islamic State (ISIS).

Last year, Iran’s Ministry of Intelligence announced the arrest of 26 individuals in connection with the Shah Cheragh shrine attack. According to the ministry, the arrested individuals, all non-Iranians, held nationalities from Azerbaijan, Tajikistan, and Afghanistan.
