At least 929 families have been provided with food rations in the Mardyan district of the northern Jowzjan province amid an acute hunger crisis, officials said.
Asadullah Hamza, Taliban’s head of rural rehabilitation and development in the province, said that the rations were distributed on Sunday which include flour, cooking oil, peas, dry lentil, and nutrition for children.
Hamza added that the food aid was delivered by World Health Program and was distributed by United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA).
Local residents in Mardyan expressed their gratitude for the food aid, but some said that the Taliban authorities and the international community should provide jobs for people as a sustainable solution.
These residents also called on the World Food Program to expand its aid delivery to other remote districts in the province including Kham Aab and Qarqin districts.
Afghanistan remains one of the world’s worst humanitarian disasters. According to Human Rights Watch, two-thirds of the country’s population is food insecure, including nearly a million children facing acute malnutrition. Women and girls remain most at risk.
