A private TV news channel, Kabul News, has stopped its news and media operations due to reasons yet to be disclosed, a source confirms to Kabul Now.
The publisher of this news channel was Abdul Karim Khurram, a close figure to former President Hamid Karzai. The channel was said to be funded by Karzai.
This comes as the Taliban’s restrictions and dire economic conditions are reportedly the main reasons behind the closure of media outlets in Afghanistan.
According to a survey conducted by Reporters Without Borders (RSF), Afghanistan has lost 39.59% of its media outlets and 59.86% of its journalists, especially female journalists, since the Taliban’s return to power in August 2021.
The report published in August 2022 adds that women journalists have been impacted the most, as 76.19% of female journalists have lost their jobs.
