UK announces financial contribution of £8 million to Afghan presidential election

Issuing a statement on Thursday, the British Embassy has announced a financial contribution of £ eight million to support the delivery of Afghanistan presidential election.

“The UK’s Department for International Development (DFID) will make available up to £8 million to the UN Electoral Support Programme, which provides technical support to Afghanistan’s Independent Electoral Bodies,” part of the statement reads.

The statement further noted that the amount also included a planned contribution of £4 million to support preparations for the presidential election

According to the statement, British Ambassador to Afghanistan Ms Alison Blake said that the UK strongly supports holding a timely, transparent, and credible election in Afghanistan.

Officials of the US Embassy in Kabul had also asked for ensuring transparency of the election process and protection of the voters rights in a meeting with officials of the Independent Electoral Commission on Wednesday.
