Man Shot Dead in Eastern Afghanistan as Mysterious Killings Rise

KABUL, AFGHANISTAN – A man was shot dead by unidentified armed assailants in eastern Afghanistan’s Nuristan province on Monday, local sources reported, amid a recent increase in mysterious killings and other violent crimes across the country.

The sources identified the victim as Faizullah. He was killed in the Kantiwa district at around 10:30 a.m. local time on October 26.

Local Taliban authorities confirmed the incident but provided no details about the motive or the perpetrators.

The killing is the latest in a series of mysterious deaths reported in recent months. Three days earlier, a young man identified as Hassan Khudai was shot dead by armed assailants inside his shop in central Daykundi province. The motive in that case, as in most similar incidents, remains unclear.

The Taliban administration maintains that it has restored nationwide security since returning to power in 2021. Residents, civil society activists and rights groups continue to express concern over the protection of civilians, citing the absence of independent investigations and a lack of accountability for those responsible for such attacks.
