KABUL, AFGHANISTAN – Five members of a family were killed when their mud house collapsed in Afghanistan’s eastern Nangarhar province, Taliban authorities said, as heavy rainfall and flooding continue to cause deaths and damage across the region.
The collapse occurred on Thursday evening in Jalalabad, the provincial capital, according to Sediqullah Quraishi, head of the Taliban’s Department of Information and Culture in Nangarhar.
Quraishi said the house gave way after heavy rain, killing five family members, including a father and his sons. One other person was injured in the incident.
The incident adds to a series of weather-related casualties in eastern Afghanistan in recent days. Heavy rainfall and flash floods have killed and injured dozens of people and damaged homes, agricultural land, roads, and public infrastructure in several provinces.
At least 26 people were killed, and more than 50 were injured in recent floods in Nuristan province alone, according to United Nations and Taliban figures. Casualties and destruction were also reported in Panjshir, Nangarhar, and Laghman provinces.
The floods have washed away farmland, killed livestock, and damaged transportation routes, disrupting livelihoods in rural communities that depend heavily on agriculture.
Many homes in rural areas are built with mud and other local materials that are vulnerable to prolonged rainfall. Humanitarian agencies have warned that Afghanistan is highly exposed to climate-related disasters, with recurring floods and extreme weather affecting thousands of people each year.
