China Provides $100,000 in Aid to Flood-Affected Communities in Afghanistan

KABUL, AFGHANISTAN – The Chinese Embassy in Kabul has announced a $100,000 assistance package for communities affected by recent heavy rains and flash floods across Afghanistan.

Zhao Xing, China’s ambassador in Kabul, said in a post on X on Wednesday, April 15, that the aid was delivered through the Red Cross Society of China to the Afghan Red Crescent Society.

He noted that the funding is intended to strengthen ongoing relief efforts and provide support to those impacted by the recent natural disasters.

Meanwhile, Taliban authorities have stated that since March 27, flash floods have claimed the lives of more than 180 people and caused widespread destruction, including the damage or collapse of hundreds of homes.

Humanitarian needs are expected to remain high as affected communities continue to struggle with loss of shelter, livelihoods, and access to basic services. Aid organizations have emphasized the urgency of sustained international support to prevent further deterioration of conditions in vulnerable areas.

The new funding comes as Afghanistan remains heavily reliant on humanitarian assistance following the Taliban’s return to power in 2021. Nearly half of the population continues to need aid, while international funding for humanitarian operations has declined in recent years.

Aid agencies have repeatedly warned that insufficient funding could critically undermine life-saving operations in the coming months.

China has played a consistent role in providing humanitarian assistance to Afghanistan, particularly in times of crisis. Over the past decades, Beijing has contributed emergency aid following natural disasters, supported health and food programs, and maintained diplomatic engagement even during periods of political transition.

In recent years, China has also expressed interest in expanding economic cooperation and infrastructure development, positioning itself as a key regional partner while continuing to deliver humanitarian support in response to Afghanistan’s ongoing challenges.
