KABUL, AFGHANISTAN – The Taliban-run Commission for the Affairs of Migrants says more than 3,200 Afghan migrants were deported from Pakistan and Iran and returned to Afghanistan in a single day.
According to the commission, 3,249 migrants were sent back on Wednesday (January 14). Of them, 3,095 were deported from Pakistan and entered Afghanistan through the Torkham crossing in Nangarhar, Spin Boldak in Kandahar, and the Bahramcha border crossing in Helmand province.
The commission added that another 154 migrants were deported from Iran and entered Afghanistan through the Islam Qala crossing in Herat and the Pul-e-Abrisham crossing in Nimroz province.
Taliban officials say the returnees were provided with basic assistance upon arrival, and some were transported to their home provinces.
Pakistan and Iran have intensified the deportation of Afghan migrants over the past solar year, sending back more than 2.5 million people.
International organizations warn that the mass deportations have worsened Afghanistan’s humanitarian crisis, increasing the country’s urgent need for aid and assistance.
