KABUL, AFGHANISTAN – Local sources report that Pakistan border guards and Taliban forces exchanged fire near the Afghanistan-Pakistan border in Kunar province on Wednesday, highlighting persistent tensions despite a fragile ceasefire between the two sides.
According to the sources, the clash occurred around 12:00 PM in the border area of Dangam district, Kunar province. It reportedly began after Pakistani forces fired rockets toward Kunar, prompting Taliban fighters to respond. The fighting has since ended.
There is currently no verified information on casualties or material damage. Officials from both Pakistan and the Taliban have not commented on the incident.
The latest reported clash follows a series of border clashes over the past few months. In October, one of the deadliest clashes along the border killed and injured dozens on both sides, including civilians.
A ceasefire mediated by Turkey and Qatar temporarily eased hostilities. However, subsequent diplomatic efforts to reach a longer-term agreement, including recent talks in Saudi Arabia, have so far failed to produce a durable solution.
Disagreements over security issues, particularly Pakistan’s concerns about the presence of the Tehrik-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) in Afghanistan, continue to weigh heavily on bilateral relations. Islamabad has repeatedly accused the Taliban of permitting TTP fighters to operate from Afghan territory, an allegation the Taliban deny.
Following earlier clashes, Pakistan closed its border crossings with Afghanistan, suspending trade and cross-border movement. The closures, which have now lasted more than two months, have disrupted commerce, transport, and daily life for communities on both sides of the border.
