The Taliban’s Supreme Court has announced that 19 people, including one woman, were publicly flogged in Afghanistan’s Zabul province. According to the court, the individuals had been convicted of offences including theft, adultery, sodomy, and “illicit relationships.” Their sentences ranged from 10 months to six years in prison, along with 10 to 39 lashes.
The Supreme Court said in a statement that the punishments were carried out publicly on Monday (November 17).
Since returning to power, the Taliban have reinstated public corporal punishment despite widespread criticism from human rights organisations.
The group has also carried out the public execution of 11 people in front of hundreds spectators.
