KABUL – Qatar has appointed Mirdef Al Qashouti as Qatar’s Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary to Afghanistan.
The Amiri Diwan announced the appointment on Tuesday, October 21, following a decree by Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, the Emir of Qatar. Al Qashouti had been serving as Qatar’s top diplomat in Kabul since the Taliban’s return to power in August 2021.
Al Qashouti previously served as Qatar’s Charge d’Affaires in Kabul.
Since the Taliban’s return to power in Afghanistan, Qatar has maintained extensive engagement with the group.
Recently, Qatar, alongside Turkey, mediated a ceasefire agreement between the Taliban and Pakistan.
The Gulf state has also acted as a mediator in prisoner exchanges between the Taliban and the United States and has facilitated the deportation of convicted Afghan migrants from several European countries.
