China Calls on Taliban and Pakistan to Settle Disputes Through Dialogue

KABUL – China’s Foreign Ministry has urged the Taliban and Pakistan to exercise restraint and resolve their differences through dialogue and consultation, following days of deadly clashes along the border.

Lin Jian, spokesperson for the Chinese Foreign Ministry, said during a press briefing on Monday, October 13, that the long-term interests of both Afghanistan and Pakistan depend on maintaining good neighborly relations, pursuing economic and social development, and jointly combating terrorism.

He expressed Beijing’s concern over the recent escalation, noting that both countries are China’s friends and neighbors.

“China sincerely hopes that the two countries will, in light of their broader interests, remain calm and exercise restraint, properly address each other’s concerns through dialogue and consultation, avoid further escalation, and work together for peace and stability in both nations and the wider region,” Lin said.

He added that China would continue to play a constructive role in improving relations between Kabul and Islamabad, while also calling on both sides to ensure the safety and security of Chinese personnel, projects, and institutions operating in their territories.

The appeal came after Taliban and Pakistani forces exchanged fire for several hours along the border on Saturday night. The Taliban confirmed the deaths of nine of their fighters, while Pakistan said 23 of its soldiers were killed in the clashes.

The confrontation followed Taliban claims that Pakistan had violated Afghanistan’s airspace by conducting airstrikes on targets in Kabul and Paktika provinces last Thursday.

Several neighboring and regional countries, including Iran, Qatar, and Saudi Arabia, have also urged both sides to exercise restraint and resolve their disputes through diplomatic means.
