KABUL, AFGHANISTAN – The body of a woman has been discovered in Samangan province, central Afghanistan, amid growing concern over a surge in mysterious killings across the country.
According to local sources, the woman’s body, showing clear signs of severe beating and torture, was found on Tuesday in Khulm district of Samangan and taken to the provincial hospital.
The woman’s identity, as well as the motive behind her killing, remains unclear. Local Taliban authorities in Samangan have not yet commented on the case.
The discovery comes amid a surge in mysterious killings and violent crime across Afghanistan. Similar cases have been reported in several provinces in recent weeks.
In its latest report, the UK-based Afghan rights group Rawadari documented at least 251 cases of mysterious, targeted, and extrajudicial killings in Afghanistan over the past six months. The group said the figure marks a 30% increase compared to the same period last year, with many incidents linked to Taliban members and unidentified individuals.
The rise in such cases has fueled growing fears among Afghans about worsening security, despite Taliban claims of restoring order since their return to power in 2021.
