Taliban Arrest Former Soldier in Kabul After Deportation from Iran

KABUL – Taliban intelligence forces have arrested a former Afghan soldier in Kabul after his recent deportation from Iran, relatives told KabulNow.

The ex-soldier, identified as Abdulhamid Junbish from Panjshir province, was detained on Saturday, September 27, in the Qowaye Markaz area of Kabul’s District 2, according to family members.

Junbish previously served with the 207th Corps in western Afghanistan under the former republic. After the Taliban takeover, he fled to Iran but was recently deported. The reasons for his arrest remain unknown.

Despite the Taliban’s repeated claims of a “general amnesty”, reports of arrests, disappearances, and killings of ex-soldiers have continued over the past four years.

Just a month earlier, another former officer, Walid Naimi, a police officer from Panjshir who had also returned from Iran, disappeared in Kabul. His body was later discovered.

A UN report in July documented credible evidence that the Taliban have committed serious human rights violations—including torture, arbitrary detention, and threats—against Afghans forcibly returned from Iran and Pakistan, particularly targeting ex-security personnel.
