Female Doctor Shot Dead in Eastern Afghanistan Amid Surge in Mysterious Killings

KABUL, AFGHANISTAN – A young female doctor was shot and killed by unidentified gunmen in eastern Nangarhar province on Sunday, amid a rise in mysterious and targeted killings across the country.

Local sources told KabulNow that the victim, identified as Zeba, was gunned down around 8:30 a.m. in Jalalabad, the provincial capital. She worked in the gynecology and obstetrics department of Nangarhar provincial hospital.

According to the sources, she was waiting for her transport near the Taliban’s provincial police headquarters when the gunmen opened fire.

The Taliban police confirmed the incident and said the assailants managed to flee the scene. The motive for the killing remains unknown.

This incident is part of a growing wave of criminal violence and targeted killings across Afghanistan, with similar cases recently reported across multiple provinces in the country.

As such incidents mount, many Afghans are expressing increasing concern over public safety and a deteriorating sense of security, despite Taliban claims of maintaining law and order since returning to power in 2021.

Human rights groups and activists accuse the Taliban of failing to investigate such crimes and neglecting their responsibility to protect civilians.
