KABUL, AFGHANISTAN – Local sources in Helmand province report that the body of a young man has been recovered from the Arghandab River in Lashkargah, the provincial capital.
According to the sources, the victim, identified as Samiullah, had been missing for approximately eight days before his body was discovered. His family, after days of searching, found his remains near the riverbank in Lashkargah.
Samiullah was reportedly a resident of the Qala-e-Bost area of the city. The circumstances surrounding his death remain unclear, and it is not yet known how or by whom he was killed.
Taliban officials in Helmand have so far made no public statements regarding the incident.
The discovery comes amid a surge in criminal violence and a string of targeted killings across Afghanistan. Similar cases have been reported in multiple provinces in recent weeks.
As such incidents continue to rise, many Afghans are voicing deepening concern over public safety and the deteriorating security situation, despite Taliban claims of having restored order since retaking control of the country.
Human rights groups and civil society activists argue that the Taliban are failing to uphold their responsibility to protect civilians and are not conducting credible investigations into these killings.
