KABUL, AFGHANISTAN – At least two Taliban members were killed in a clash with Pakistani border forces in the Shigal district of eastern Kunar province, local sources reported.
The incident, which occurred on Saturday (June 14 ), unfolded in the Takhta Khor area after Pakistani forces began construction of a new outpost, an action that sparked the confrontation.
The two deceased were identified as Sher Alam and Musa, reportedly fighters under the command of Mawlawi Mohammad Mohsin.
Taliban officials in Kunar have not yet released any comment on the incident.
This incident follows a separate exchange of fire just two days earlier in Dangam district, where Pakistani border guards reportedly fired rockets into Kunar, killing a local youth.
Such incidents occur amid a long-standing pattern of confrontations along the disputed Durand Line, where Taliban forces and Pakistani security personnel routinely clash over border demarcation, outpost construction, and fence repair.
In February and March 2025, similar skirmishes were reported along the border, including a deadly firefight between Frontier Corps and Taliban border guards that claimed multiple casualties on both sides and disrupted border crossings. More recent reporting indicates clashes in nearby Nangarhar and Helmand provinces, with residents describing routine shelling and small arms fire linked to tensions over border security structures.
While Islamabad and Kabul have historically accused each other of triggering cross-border violence, recent diplomatic efforts, including a May 2025 agreement to restore ambassador-level ties and discussions under China-facilitated talks, seek to reduce border tensions.
High alert continues along this frontier region as both nations navigate fragile peace efforts, infrastructure projects like the Durand Line barrier, and the construction of new military outposts that remain flashpoints for conflict.
