Afghan Woman’s Mutilated Remains Found Weeks After Disappearance in Tehran

KABUL, AFGHANISTAN – The mutilated body of a young Afghan woman was discovered in Tehran on June 3, nearly 50 days after she went missing, according to a human rights group.

The Hengaw Organization reported that the victim, identified as Kobra Rezaei, was abducted in the Pishva area while on her way to work after leaving home. She was later murdered.

The motive behind her killing remains unclear.

Parts of her body were found among garbage, and DNA testing confirmed her identity. However, other body parts, her phone, and identification documents remain missing.

Iran’s state news agency IRNA, citing Sayed Akbar Arabi, police chief of Pishva County, reported the arrest of a suspect in connection with the murder. Arabi stated that following the discovery of the body, police used scientific and intelligence methods to swiftly identify and apprehend the suspect in a surprise operation.

He added that the suspect confessed to the killing during initial questioning, though the IRNA report did not mention the victim’s identity.

Hengaw also stated that despite the passage of several days since the discovery, investigative authorities have not provided the family with clear information about the case.

According to the organization’s sources, on Saturday, June 7, as the family prepared for burial, government forces intervened and blocked the funeral. Officials have so far withheld permission for Kobra Rezaei’s burial.

No further details about Kobra Rezaei have been released, and her family has not made any public statements.
