Taliban Detains Former ANDSF Member in Kabul, Sources Report

KABUL, AFGHANISTAN – A member of the former Afghanistan National Defense and Security Forces (ANDSF) has been detained by Taliban intelligence agents in Kabul, according to local sources.

The individual, identified as Mujtaba from Kapisa province, was reportedly taken into custody on Thursday and transferred to an undisclosed location.

Mujtaba previously served in the Directorate of National Security under the former government. Following the Taliban’s return to power in 2021, he became unemployed and had been living a civilian life in Kabul, the sources said.

The reason for this detention remain unknown and Taliban authorities have yet to comment.

This incident follows a similar case last week in Daykundi province, where two former ANDSF members, Mohammad Ali Tofan and Mohammad Amin, were detained by the Taliban. Both men remain in custody without further information on the charges against them.

These incidents are part of a broader pattern of targeted detentions, torture, and killings of former government officials and ANDSF members, despite the Taliban’s public announcement of a “general amnesty” following their takeover.

In his report to the UN Security Council, UN Secretary-General António Guterres documented at least five killings, 14 arbitrary arrests, and four cases of torture involving former ANDSF personnel between August and October 2024.

The UN and human rights organizations have repeatedly condemned the Taliban for alleged acts of revenge and called for the protection of the rights of all Afghan citizens, including former security personnel.
