Shooting at UN Compound in Kabul Leaves One Dead, Another Injured

KABUL, AFGHANISTAN – A shooting incident occurred on Sunday at the United Nations’ UNOCA compound in Kabul, resulting in the death of a member of Taliban’s security forces and minor injuries to a UN-contracted international security guard.

The UNOCA compound houses the United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA), offices of multiple UN agencies, funds, and programs, and accommodation for international staff members.

According to a statement from the UNAMA, the incident began when a Taliban fighter fired at a UN guard post from outside the compound’s perimeter wall.

UN-contracted security guards did not return fire during the incident, the statement added.

The international guard who sustained minor injuries is currently receiving medical care. Following the incident, the Taliban fighter was found dead outside the compound. The circumstances of his death remain unclear.

Both the United Nations and Taliban authorities are conducting separate investigations into the incident.

The Taliban had halted all movement in and out of the UNOCA compound; however, these restrictions have been lifted.

The UNOCA compound has been a significant hub for UN operations in the country, providing support and coordination for various humanitarian and development initiatives.
