Armed Opposition Groups Report Attack on Taliban, Claims Seven Casualties

KABUL, AFGHANISTAN – The armed anti-Taliban groups, the National Resistance Front (NRF) and the Afghanistan Freedom Front (AFF), reported attacks on the Taliban in Kabul and northern Faryab provinces, claiming to have killed and injured seven Taliban members.

In a statement, the NRF reported that its fighters targeted Taliban intelligence agents near Kart-e-Naw Bakery Station in the eighth district of Kabul city on Thursday evening, killing three of them.

“The targeted individuals belonged to the intelligence wing of the Taliban terrorist group,” NRF said. “In addition to the casualties, the National Resistance Front’s forces seized the enemy’s weapons,” it added.

The NRF indicated that none of its forces were harmed in the attack.

Meanwhile, the AFF, another armed opposition group, reported an attack on the Taliban’s border battalion base in Maymana, the capital of northern Faryab province, claiming to have killed two Taliban members and injured two others.

The Taliban have yet to comment on the attacks.

Following the Taliban’s takeover of Afghanistan, many opposition armed groups were formed, with two still actively fighting the Taliban in various provinces. The NRF and AFF, largely composed of former ANDSF members, have been particularly active in Kabul city and the northern regions of the country, recently intensifying their guerrilla attacks on the Taliban.

Last week, the NRF claimed to have attacked the Taliban’s Ministry of Interior, killing and injuring six Taliban members. Similarly, the AFF reported conducting a rocket attack on the military section of Kabul Airport, causing significant casualties and financial losses to the Taliban.

The Taliban authorities do not comment on the claims and attacks from these armed groups, seemingly attempting to downplay their impact.

However, in his latest quarterly report to the UN Security Council, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres stated that these armed groups continued their campaign of assassination and attacks against the Taliban, conducting 73 verified attacks in just three months, from May to July 2024.

“The Afghanistan Freedom Front and the National Resistance Front carried out 21 and 52 attacks, respectively,” the UN chief said in his report.
